Building Community

In 2017 a group of movement meditation teachers, artists, educators, activists, therapists and dancers were moved to create a new type of collective.

For over a decade we had danced together at the iconic 5Rhythms ‘Sweaty Thursdays’ in St Peters Church Vauxhall. Intentionally being collaborative we were coming together to support, contribute, bring presence and companionship to the work we were developing and delivering. Inspired by the vision of Christian de Sousa, we eventually emerged into a community interest company called dancingTao, which a few years later evolved into Unbound Moving Arts. Our mission statement “To deliver activities that benefit the community and in particular promote and facilitate good health and well being (both physical and mental), inclusion, diversity, creative expression, and positive change for individuals and communities, using dance, movement meditation practices and related modalities”.

Through dancingTao CIC we delivered a diverse program of activities ranging from weekly drop in classes to ongoing groups, workshops and 3-5 day immersions bringing our work to a wide range of dancers from all ages, backgrounds and experiences. In 2018 we were awarded Erasmus funding to produce a project that explored movement practice, and social inclusion, involving partners from London, Berlin, Rome and Budapest. It was a year long project culminating in Rhythm Village a 10 day long community festival of movement and creative celebration.

The early 2020s pandemic brought lots of change to our communities and society as a whole and we decided we needed to change also to continue to serve those communities who needed our work during these challenging times. And so in 2021 dancingTao evolved into Unbound Moving Arts. Unbound Moving Arts continue the work of the dancingTao CIC with an expanded vision and a deep determination to reach those in our communities who reside and move on on the edges.

Being part of this Community Interest Company is a beautiful imperfect experiment in the ways we can come together and be in service to community with ample hearts and awakened souls.

“The dancing community is made up of many people who are socially aware and committed to deep change, including social change and the courage to change themselves. The team are extraordinary – professional, supportive, organised and deeply kind.”
